Roger Goodell hints that 'RedZone' might grow beyond the NFL at ESPN

Potential for College Football’s “Red Zone” Concept After ESPN’s NFL Acquisition

Could college football soon receive a similar “red zone” treatment following the significant acquisition of ESPN’s NFL properties? On Wednesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hinted at this possibility during a press conference where the new deals were unveiled, including the popular Scott Hanson program.

Goodell noted, “In that context, ESPN has acquired the red zone name and can potentially use it for other sports, including college football. I think fans might be really excited about this idea.” He mentioned this during a profile segment on SportsCenter.

The “NFL Redzone” has captured the hearts of fans on Sundays, with Scott Hanson at the helm, guiding viewers through the thrilling moments as teams near the end zone.

In a deal formalized on Tuesday, the NFL is set to take a 10% stake in ESPN in exchange for media assets. Hanson confirmed his continued role on social media, affirming, “It’s official. For those wondering: Yes, I still host the Red Zone. We’re kicking off for a fantastic season, and I’m optimistic about this new partnership.” Hanson has been hosting “Redzone” since its launch in 2009.

The incorporation of a “red zone” for college football could significantly enhance Saturday viewing, especially given the numerous games and the exciting potential for expansion into other sports.

According to NFL.com, ESPN, as part of a “non-binding contract,” now holds extensive rights to the Redzone brand and compensates for the inclusion of the NFL Redzone channel with TV operators. This announcement comes just a month before the start of the 2025 NFL season.

The concept might even attract casual fans who lack a dedicated college team, simply looking to enjoy the games. While the “red zone” remains a logical first step, it seems plausible that college basketball could be next on the agenda. ESPN is also working on a new sports viewing app set to launch this fall.

Goodell confirmed that although ESPN controls the Redzone name, the core show will remain unchanged. “It will continue to be produced right here,” he assured.
