Roku slammed over automatic ads playing at startup: ‘Considering jumping ship now’

This TV wasn't very smart.

There are so many accessible streaming services these days, and you have to sit through some ads while watching something. However, many annoyed Roku OS users were forced to view the ads before opening the main menu.

Roku customer ran reddit To share the frustration when patience was tested earlier this week by a series of redundant ads that play automatically when you open an operating system.

On Ar/Roku Subreddit, one user wrote:

This was clearly not a glitch.

“It happened again today. If that's what my roku device would go into the trash,” one person wrote.

“I went through the same thing. Considering my options to jump the ship right now,” another shared.

“Yes, this started last night for me. It was very disappointing and getting in the way. I already have three sticks and two Roku TVs so I can't imagine it would be enough to leave Roku, but I will not buy a future Roku device,” the comment read.

Roku appears to have matched the ads they are forcing people to grow. This time we were an ad for last year's “Moana 2” movie.

“It just happened to me for Moana. It's absolute trash. If they let me see the ads to go to my app so I can go to my app,” the angry user said.

“Yeah. Moana 2 for me. I was a huge roku supporter, but this would end it. I might still use them, but I keep telling everyone in my life to buy one,” read another frustrating comment.

“When I turned on the TV, Moana ads for me!” I wrote another commenter.

The post reached out to Roku for comment.

in statementRoku's representative confirmed that the annoying ads were new to the brand being tested.

“Our recent testing is just the latest example, as it offers a fun and simple user experience while exploring new ways to showcase brands and programming,” Tech Company said.

This is not the first time a customer has been furious with Roku. In 2024, the brand experienced two cyberattacks that affected over 500,000 accounts. Thankfully, the company said the hackers were unable to access sensitive information.
