Romania bans second far-right hopeful from presidential election re-run | Romania

Romania's Saturday Election Commission ruled out Diana Orerca, the second far-right hopeful, from the May presidential election, amid rising tensions from the May presidential election.

In early March, the Election Bureau banned independent Karin Georgek, who had voted about 40% before the rebroadcast election.

Georgescu, a fierce EU and NATO critic, was shot prominently last November when he unexpectedly put the first round of the presidential vote to the top.

However, the Constitutional Court has overturned the election after Russian interference and claims of “large” social media promotion.

On Saturday, a statement from the Election Commission said it also took the “decision to refuse Diana Ooaa's candidacy.”

The country's constitutional court noted that in November she had already banned her to make a declaration “against democratic values.”

However, the election office examined the candidacy of George Simion, the leader of the Romanian Union (AUR) alliance. Following Georgescu's exclusion, he is still the most prominent figure on the far right in the running.

șoșoaacæ, a 49-year-old Euro MP known for her pro-Russian opinion posted on Facebook: “It's proof that we don't live in a democracy,” she said she would appeal the ruling.

On Thursday, she wore boxing gloves when she submitted the candidates and declared she was ready to “fight the system once more” while bidding on “making Europe and Romania great again.”

șoșoAcæ has been accused of spreading propaganda and anti-Semitism views of the Prokremlin.

She opposed anti-Covid measures during the pandemic and was expelled from the European Parliament in Strasbourg in July 2024 after loudly pausing debate.

Her little party, Sos. Romania won 24 seats after securing around 7% of the votes in the legislative election in December.

Simion's Aur said Banning “represents an “admission of Ooaa” “a further blow to Romanian democracy and a serious violation of fundamental rights and freedoms.”

Eastern Europe has fallen into chaos since the emergence of Georgek's surprise in November, behind the huge Tiktox social media campaign that was ravaged by alleged Russian interference.

The shocking decision has resulted in the November election being cancelled, and Georgek will undoubtedly be removed from the election this week, with that first round scheduled for May 4th.

The exclusion of Georgescu has led to some violent protests.

On Saturday, thousands marched through Bucharest to express their attachment to the EU.
