Romanians with organized crime ties among 20 nabbed at US-Canadian border

A group of 20 Romanians, including two with organized crime ties, were arrested Tuesday after crossing the Canadian border into the United States illegally, authorities said.

According to sources, four vehicles were seen crossing the border from Canada into the United States, and Border Patrol arrested the subjects. press release From U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Officers responded to the scene just after 6 a.m. near Lincoln Road in Hodgdon, a rural town in northeastern Maine along the Canadian border, after receiving a report of an illegal crossing.

CBP said Border Patrol agents used emergency equipment to stop the vehicle. Subject transported to Fort Fairfield Station for processing.

Upon processing, the subject was determined to be from Romania. Most of the victims were family members, including 10 adults and 10 juveniles. Two of the subjects processed were found to have ties to international organized crime, according to CBP.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dennis Harmon said there is an overall heightened level of anxiety in the Houlton area.

“Over the past three Octobers, the Houlton sector has seen a total of 33 individuals,” Harmon said. “There have been 53 cases in 2024 alone.”
