Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney told MSNBC’s Stephanie Rhule that he finds it “unimaginable” that there is “increasing isolationism” within the Republican Party.
Mr. Romney said the United States and its economy are connected to the rest of the world and suggested that if the United States had been more isolationist in the past, Germany would have ruled the world.
“America puts itself first when it comes to dealing with the world and stopping bad people.”
The senator, who is not running for re-election this year, said he laughed off the idea that “America first” usually means isolationism.
“When America engages in the world, when it comes to stopping bad people, we put ourselves first,” he asserted.
He said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin chooses to invade Poland, he would be drawing the United States into the war. “Or we could leave NATO. In that case, President Putin will continue to move forward,” he said. “If the world follows the orders that have existed for the past 75 years, we will be safe and prosperous,” he said.
Mr. Ruhl asked Mr. Romney whether Mr. Romney could serve as secretary of state if President Joe Biden is re-elected, but the Republican senator quickly rejected the idea.
Mr. Romney, who lost the 2012 presidential election to incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama, said he would not vote for Mr. Trump this year.He also didn’t vote for Trump 2016 or 2020.
