Romney suggests Biden made ‘enormous error’ in not pardoning Trump: ‘It was a win-win’

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) argued Wednesday that President Biden made a tactical mistake by not exempting former President Trump from legal prosecution.

“He should have fought like crazy to stop this prosecution,” Romney said. MSNBC Host Stephanie Ruhl. “It was a win-win for Donald Trump.”

Presidents of the United States can only pardon federal cases, but Romney said Biden made a “big mistake” by not pardoning his predecessor and by pressuring New York prosecutors to drop the hush money case against Trump. “I committed a crime,” he claimed.

Romney said Biden missed an opportunity to unite the country by supporting him.

Sen. Mitt Romney suggested what he would do if he were in Biden’s shoes regarding Trump’s legal issues.

“I may not agree with this opinion, but if I were President Biden, I would have pardoned him immediately when the Justice Department brought charges,” he said. “If it were me, I would have pardoned President Trump. Why? Well, because it would make me, President Biden, a great man and the person I pardoned would be a dwarf.”

Mr. Romney argued that political precedent for such a move was seen during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.

“I’ve been here for a while. If LBJ had been president and didn’t want something like this to happen, he would have kept saying to prosecutors, ‘It’s better not to bring it up. “Okay, or I’m going to do it.” I’m going to remove you from office,” Mr. Romney claimed.

Asked about the political display, Mr. Romney said, “I think it’s a terrible mistake for our country to see people attacking our legal system. It’s a huge mistake.” “I also think it’s humiliating for people to stand outside the courthouse wearing a red tie and obviously trying to run for vice president. It’s just — it would have been awkward for me.”
