A translation of the clip reshared by DeSantis shows Omar telling the crowd, “America is a country where one of your daughters is in Congress representing your interests.”
“As long as I am in the U.S. Congress, Somalia will never be in danger and its water will never be stolen by Ethiopia or any other country…I am here to protect Somalia’s interests from within the U.S. system. Sleep peacefully knowing that you are in safe hands.”

The video sparked a storm of anger from critics who accused the Democratic congressman of putting loyalty to his homeland above the United States.

Omar fled her homeland with her family near the outbreak of Somalia’s civil war in 1991 and spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp before immigrating to the United States in 1995.

Late Tuesday, Omar appeared to be throwing shade at DeSantis. She did not directly address his tweets attacking her, but mocked his failed 2024 presidential campaign.
“We’re moving on from the mistakes of 2024 and preparing for the mistakes of 2028,” he tweeted in response to an article suggesting the Republican governor was looking ahead to the next election.
