“We love each other as Somalis. There are areas where friction has arisen to the point where it is killing us, but the reality is that we are an organized society, we are brothers and sisters, and we are the same. These are people of blood,” she said, adding, “These are people who know they are Somali first and Muslim second.” They protect each other, help each other, and other Muslims also come to help. ”
She went on to explain that Somalia’s interests will be safe as long as she remains in office, stating that the U.S. government “will only do what the Somali people in the United States tell us to do.”

Many commenters noted that Omar seemed to prioritize loyalty to Somalia throughout her statements and never referred to herself as an American.
Her comments sparked outrage from colleagues and others, some of whom said she should “resign in shame.”
