Ron Johnson on a potential recession: 'You have to act boldly'

Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has observed that the economic strategies of the Trump administration have contributed to concerns over a possible recession, emphasizing the need for decisive action to address the current turmoil.

During an appearance on CNN’s “Union Nation” on Sunday, he discussed the recession risks linked to President Trump’s tariff policies. Trump, on the other hand, has maintained that the nation’s economic situation will stabilize over time.

Johnson reminisced about Ronald Reagan’s presidency when inflation surged dramatically. He recalled how Reagan and Paul Volcker needed to make significant and immediate decisions, resulting in a substantial recession to manage inflation effectively.

The senator also criticized the Biden administration regarding issues such as U.S. border security, international conflicts, and inflation.

“Cleaning up such vast problems is definitely challenging, so I appreciate that President Trump took decisive and timely steps to address some of these issues,” Johnson stated.

He recognized that resolving these problems isn’t always straightforward, suggesting that some parts of the approach might require review or adjustment.

“However, when you’re accountable, you must act boldly,” he added.

On NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump commented on the possibility of a recession, suggesting that “anything can happen,” but expressed confidence that it isn’t a long-term issue, framing it as merely a “transition period.”

Like Johnson, Trump attributed the current economic climate to the Biden administration, holding previous administrations responsible as concerns about a recession grow. Johnson remarked, “He fully understands that one reason he won the presidency was due to Joe Biden’s high inflation.”
