Ron Washington Remains on Medical Leave for the 2025 Season
The Los Angeles Angels have confirmed that manager Ron Washington will continue his medical leave for the rest of the 2025 season due to unspecified health concerns.
Washington, who is 73, temporarily stepped away from his role after experiencing shortness of breath following the Angels’ series against the New York Yankees that concluded on June 19. After that series, he went back to Southern California for a series of medical evaluations, leading to his leave. Notably, Washington is the oldest manager currently in Major League Baseball.
“We’re starting to see our team’s character reflected in Ron Washington’s influence,” said Angels general manager Perry Minasian. “There’s a certain resilience and toughness that he embodies.”
Minasian added that the players are committed to playing hard for him during his absence.
Ray Montgomery, the team’s bench coach, took over for Washington when he first went on leave and has since been named interim manager.
Washington was appointed by the Angels ahead of the 2024 season, managing a record of 103 wins and 140 losses across 243 games. Prior to this, he managed the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014, achieving a record of 664 wins and 611 losses and leading the team to consecutive World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011 before resigning unexpectedly in September 2014.
Currently, the Angels hold a 40-41 record this season and Montgomery has guided the team to 7 wins and 4 losses in his interim capacity.
The Angels recently lost to the Washington Nationals with a score of 15-9 and are looking to bounce back in their next match against the Nationals in the ongoing series.
