Ronnie Mauricio’s Emotional Return to Citi Field

Ronnie Mauricio was definitely in higher spirits on Tuesday. It was a significant day for him as he played in front of the Mets’ home crowd for the first time since October 1, 2023. After undergoing two surgeries on his right knee, he worked hard to make his comeback, participating in 19 minor league games to earn his spot back in the majors.

His MLB season debut saw him play five out of seven games during a recent road trip. “When I first came, the emotions were overwhelming in Los Angeles,” Mauricio shared through interpreter Alan Sriel. He added that nothing could compare to being home and playing at Citi Field.

Mets fans haven’t forgotten about their former top prospect, especially after he endured a torn ACL injury and a setback in August 2024. They were calling for him to get another shot back in May, even though the first-place team had plenty of infield options available.

“Feeling that support from all the fans is amazing,” Mauricio expressed before playing seven innings on three bases, while Brett Batty stepped in the eighth spot.

So how did he fare with his opportunity? Well, he was 11-for-5 on home runs, scoring four runs and playing three different positions, including designated hitter, during the Mets’ sweep against the Rockies.

“After missing a year of development, I’d say it’s definitely better than I expected,” remarked coach Carlos Mendoza. “He’s showing consistency; it’s not too high, not too low.” Mauricio’s ability to adapt was also on display, with fans eagerly welcoming him for his first game at home.

Mendoza acknowledged the hard work Mauricio put in to return, mentioning that many people supported his journey. “It’s an emotional moment for him to play in front of his fans,” he said. “He deserves this.” Now, the challenge is balancing playtime for Mauricio along with fellow players like Batty and Luissanger Ackna.

Acuña’s role in offensive strategies was a bit puzzling, as he was used as a defensive alternative and pinch runner, but didn’t play in Tuesday’s lineup, despite fitting well against left-handed pitchers. “That’s the balance we’re working with,” Mendoza noted. “Acuña currently has a role that helps us win games, and we’re constantly evaluating what’s best for the team.”

Mauricio’s versatility and natural shortstop skills certainly increase his value, perhaps even complicating Acuña’s position on the field. “I feel like I’m finally getting into the rhythm of things,” Mauricio shared. “It’s not perfect yet, but I believe I belong here.”

Before the game, Mark Vientos was seen jogging on the field and taking swings in the cage, indicating an uptick in his activity after recovering from his hamstring strain on June 2. Mendoza mentioned that Vientos would likely need a rehabilitation assignment.

On another note, the Mets placed Francisco Alvarez on the paternity leave list. As Alvarez’s partner had not given birth yet, the timeline for his return remains uncertain.

The team recently signed outfielder Travis Jankowski to a minor league contract and he is expected to report to Syracuse. Jankowski previously played 43 games against the Mets in 2022, often used by then-manager Back Shorterter to bolster defense.

This season, Jankowski recorded a batting average of .244 and an OPS of .575 while playing with the White Sox and Rays.

In the meantime, Shawn Manair completed his second rehabilitation start, pitching 46 times over 2²/₃ innings without allowing any runs. The left-hander faced two hits, walked one, and struck out four.
