Ronnie Mauricio Gets Another Opportunity
Ronnie Mauricio is back. The Mets infielder was called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday after Marcus Semien landed on the 10-day injured list with a left hip flexor strain.
In his recent game against the Cubs, Mauricio went 1-for-5 during a 10-inning, 4-3 defeat at Citi Field. His journey with the major league team has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. He missed all of 2024 due to a knee injury that required multiple surgeries. Not to mention, he broke his thumb in May, which sidelined him for a while. Those injuries really set him back, and since 2025, he’s struggled to find consistency, recording a .662 OPS over 61 games.
This season, he’s hitting .216 with the Mets. When Francisco Lindor was out with a calf strain in late April, Mauricio unfortunately couldn’t make the most of his opportunity due to that thumb injury.
With the team’s current infield situation being somewhat precarious, Mauricio has another chance to impress. Semien’s injury comes just a day after Lindor’s return, and Jorge Polanco is also sidelined with Achilles bursitis.
Manager Carlos Mendoza had some thoughts on Mauricio’s return. “Overall, his at-bats were okay, especially from the right side,” he said. “It was my first game back after being out for a bit… I thought I did alright.”
In the recent game, Mauricio notched a double and struck out, but he also committed an error while trying to throw to first base. There was a moment in the bottom of the 9th with two on and two outs that could’ve been a big opportunity for him, but he grounded out, sending the game into overtime. In the 10th inning, a double from Pete Crow Armstrong allowed automatic runner Matt Shaw to cross home plate, putting the Cubs ahead.
The Mets failed to score in the bottom of the 10th, marking their sixth straight loss. This won’t be Mauricio’s last opportunity in the immediate future, as Mendoza referred to Semien’s status as “weekly” before the game.
There’s hope that this time, Mauricio can turn things around as his big league career has been somewhat underwhelming, despite flashes of potential.
