Roof collapses at St. Patrick’s Day party near University of Pittsburgh

Dozens of people were injured in a St. Patrick's Day celebration near the University of Pittsburgh on Friday.

Just before 5:30pm, Pittsburgh police officers, firefighters and EMS responded to the 300 block of Semple Street in central Oakland to report a city injury and a porch collapse.

The emergency crew found a collapsed porch behind the residence where a large crowd gathered.

Witnesses reported that hundreds were in the communal courtyard space behind the house when hundreds collapsed into the communal courtyard space behind the house, including parts above and below the porch roof.

Pittsburgh EMS took 16 people to hospital for treatment. According to the statement, 13 were transported in stable condition, while three were transported in serious and stable condition.

The majority of the transport was due to minor arm and leg injuries and concussions, officials noted. One is believed to have suffered from a broken leg, and at least dozens were treated in the scene due to small abrasions.

The permits, licences and inspections responded to the scene and denounced the porch, but the housing structure itself was deemed healthy.

The University of Pittsburgh police also responded to the scene and supported the city's efforts.

“As a reminder, being on the rooftop is never safe,” the University of Pittsburgh Police Department wrote in a post on X.

The University of Pittsburgh refused to check with Fox News Digital if any of the students were injured in the incident, saying “it's the city of Pittsburgh.”

The city told Fox News Digital that it had not “certified the age” of those taken to the hospital, but noted that it was not recorded by EMS during transport.
