ROOKE: Trump Must Strike Back At BLM With A New Holiday Of His Own

During the height of BLM’s cultural and political power in America, our elected officials decided to codify a new holiday that gave race baiters the yearly right to demonize Americans for “past sins.” President Donald Trump should rectify this mistake by joining other countries in celebrating one of the most significant events in human history: the Resurrection of Christ.

On June 20, 2020, while cities were burning to the ground due to the race riots following the death of George Floyd, Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn introduced a resolution on the Senate floor to codify Juneteenth as a national holiday.

“It took two and a half years for the slaves in the South to learn that they were free. And that day came on a day we now celebrate as Juneteenth,” Cornyn said. (Sign up for Mary Rooke’s weekly newsletter here!)

“As we do every year, tomorrow Texans will celebrate Juneteenth and the 155th anniversary of the end of slavery in our state. It’s an opportunity to reflect on our history, the mistakes we have made, but yet how far we’ve come in the fight for equality, and a reminder of just how far we still have to go,” he continued.

“That is especially true this year. Over the last several weeks, Americans of all races and backgrounds, of all ages, have raised their voice in the fight against inequality and injustice that continues to exist in our society,” Cornyn added. “As the list of black men and women killed by police officers in custody grows, the calls for action are getting louder and louder, as they must, and as they should.

“There is a clear and urgent need for leaders at every level to come together, and to deliver the change that we need to deliver, in order to match up with our ideals,” he said.

Under pressure, our elected officials help codify anti-American sentiment into the official calendar of our country. Republicans and Democrats ensured that, for generations, Americans would never be able to break free from the divisiveness of racial tensions that were literally destroying our communities. It’s only fitting that Trump should begin the healing process by centering our nation on its Christian heritage.

In the U.S., the Monday after Easter Sunday appears to signal the return to the country’s regular schedule. However, for Christians all over the Western World, it marks the celebration called the “Monday of the Angel,” where Christians remember the Gospel story of the angels at the tomb, confirming the resurrection of Jesus. It’s a time of joy and reflection on the greatest sacrifice and the blessing of redeeming love. The U.S. is notably one of the few Western countries that doesn’t observe Easter Monday as a federal holiday, despite Christianity being the largest religion and a significant part of our cultural heritage. Even our wayward Northern neighbor, Canada, gives its citizens a public holiday to celebrate the angels at the tomb.

Trump has already returned the White House tradition of proudly commemorating Holy Week, which was a stark contrast to the way the Biden administration handled the remembrances of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The next step would be to extend the national celebration to Easter Monday, through championing Republican Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt’s bill to make Easter Monday a national holiday.

Christianity transcends race. It’s the ultimate weapon against those who would divide God’s creation based on physical characteristics. If BLM gets a holiday to be used as a cudgel to beat Americans into emotional submission, then Trump should give us one that equalizes society through the reality that we are all sinners who need redemption.
