Rookie Tyler Nubin could earn a starting role with Giants

Rookies have all sorts of expectations based on how high they are selected in the NFL draft, what level of prospects they are considered to be, how ready they are to compete at the next level, etc. Arrives under pressure.

Their height, weight, speed, and strength are all part of the factors that evaluate their readiness.

Their maturity, ability to accept coaching, and tolerance for physical and mental discomfort are all factors the coaching staff uses to determine which youngsters are ready to play.

Taking all these measurables into account, the Giants expect Tyler Nubin to be able to handle what is thrown at him early and often.

Having spent five years in college and played in 48 games for the University of Minnesota, Nubin has a wealth of experience, and earning a starting role in his first year with the Giants is a viable plan.

But there’s something different about Nubin than most newcomers.

Shortly after the Giants took him in the second round, general manager Joe Schon’s first comments described Nubin as a “guy with high character and leadership,” adding: “He’s a culture changer for the University of Minnesota, and he’s going to bring that type of thing.” It’s a mental issue here. ”

It’s unusual for someone new to the NFL to be given that label.

The Giants are seriously considering Nubin as more than just a ball-carrying defensive back.

They see him as charismatic and someone who will be promoted to team captain sooner or later.

This is a daunting story, and Nubin is not ready to anoint himself for others to follow.

He’s in his first action with the Giants, participating in rookie minicamp over the past few days, trying to stand out without imposing himself on anyone.

“Right now I’m just trying to learn as much as I can, be as vocal as I can, and put myself and everyone else in a position to be successful,” Nubin said. “So that’s my main goal right now, to learn and be a sponge and absorb as much as I can and be able to offer that to the other players.”

What’s it like taking on a leadership role as a newcomer?

“I think everyone can be a leader,” he said. “Anyone can be a leader on a football team, no matter who they are.”

Cornerback Jrue Phillips, another member of the 2024 draft class, met Nubin at the team facility the day after both were drafted by the Giants.

They went to dinner together, and the Giants hope the two will play together in the secondary for years to come.

One day into rookie camp, Nubin has already made an impression on his new teammates.

“He’s very good. He’s loud,” Phillips said. “I know I spent time on the playbook, but so many times I hear him yelling on the back end. Sometimes I can barely hear myself calling the plays. He I’m confident he’ll be a great player because of his knowledge and the way he communicates on the field.”

It’s a solid start.

At 6-foot-1 and 199 pounds, Nubin looks the part, and his 13 interceptions with the Golden Gophers show his athleticism, instincts and preparation.

With the departure of Xavier McKinney (he signed with the Packers), the safety spot opposite Jason Pinnock is open, and Nubin will have every opportunity to earn that spot.

Along the way, the Giants’ coaching staff believes Nubin will likely gain friends and influence people as he grows into a leadership role.

It takes more than two days in rookie camp for that to happen.

“Well, I think it’s too early,” coach Brian Daboll said. “We obviously did a lot of research before the draft. We talked for a few minutes after he got here.”

and? Is there a leader among Nubin waiting to emerge?

“You know, yes on all counts,” Daboll said. “Signs lead to Jesus. Again, he has a lot to learn, but I think the information and learning our way is most important right now.”

Schoen cited Nubin’s “leadership, personality, intelligence and outside communication skills” as “elite in those areas.”

As he develops as a player, the Giants will be watching to see how Nubin develops as a player they can grow around.
