Rory McIlroy answers the call after a spot of mobile phone interference | Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy chose to let the golf club talk. A mysterious approach to the 18th, setting up birdies for the opening round of 67, highlighted Northern Ireland's ability to create his own storyline.

Social media became a typical frenzy in this player championship accumulation after McIlroy was troubled by avid golfers in the practice round at Sawgrass. The video footage showed McIlroy removing the immutable audience's mobile phone next to the 17th tee before the individual in question was ejected by security.

“No, I can't” was McIlroy's response when asked if he could investigate the incident. Why is it not good? “Because I don't want you,” he replies. The 2019 champion was laughing, but his stance was clear. He is much more open about the tournament scenario, with McIlroy showing only one person from the lead. Finally, he finds a pine straw from the tee and then punches a great iron from 161 yards within 8 feet of the cup.

“I certainly didn't drive it the way I wanted,” McIlroy said. “I never hit it on as many fairways as I liked. I think I can get away a little because the green is so receptive. I can't get away with it for the rest of the week. I ran a bit of luck.” Certainly, McIlroy headed straight when he completed his media duties.

It has been revealed that the individual who sledged McIlroy is a college golfer and ranks 60th in the world's amateur rankings. Luke Potter represents the University of Texas, the alma mater of Jordan Spieth and Scotty Scheffler. Potter wrote to the PGA Tour with McIlroy, expressing his regret over his actions.

“Look, I'm just making a mistake and taking ownership,” Potter told GolfChannel.com. “I apologize. It's all about everything that needs to be said. It's just a good learning experience. Yeah, I apologize.”

Famous Texas golf coach John Fields also participated. “He's drilling holes in his heart,” said Fields of Potter. “He didn't think anything coming out of his mouth would result like this.” A cheerful storm of teacups. I hope Potter will face McIlroy in a future version of the Ryder Cup.

Lucas Glover, JJ Spaun and Camilo Villegas lead the pack at 6 under. Billy Hoshel and Min Woo Lee are with McIlroy at minus five. Schaeffler made the 69 in pursuit of the third player's title in succession. “I hadn't thought about it last year at all,” Schefffuller insisted. “Last year really wasn't important when it comes to this tournament. This was a new four rounds and 72 holes, and we got off to a good start today.”

Justin Thomas refused to answer the question after Round 1 was interesting. The two-time major champion wrote a passionate letter to fellow PGA Tour experts earlier this year, urging them to become more involved with the media. “We are very fortunate that so many passionate people tune in to see us every week,” Thomas said. “But let's be honest. This game sometimes feels a little far away.”

But there was Thomas here. Rather than being guided by members of his management team to provide insights about bruising 78, as I say, I am not. Others included double bogeys to match Matt Fitzpatrick, who finished his triple bogey, to Thomas' score. Viktor Hovland fell to 80.

Aaron Rai, now a resident just five minutes from Sawgrass, has opened at an impressive 68. Robert Macintyre continued his strong performance on the biggest stage of golf by signing a 3-under par 69.

Shane Laurie's level par 72 was able to pass perfectly in the context of scoring. Ludvig Aberg is hiding ominously. The Swedes will fantasize about the chance to open his major victory account at Master next month. The player's glory was merely bolstering the existing hype around Åberg. Jason Day retreated before the start of the first round. Stomach bugs have been cited as the cause of Australia's non-participation.
