Rory McIlroy at the Masters: Defending Champion’s Relaxed Start

This year, Rory McIlroy returns to the Masters defending his title, and it seems he’s approaching the tournament with a newfound sense of ease.

He kicked off his title defense on Thursday with a strong performance, finishing the first day at five under par and sharing the lead with Sam Burns.

In a post-round chat with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, McIlroy opened up about his laid-back attitude and what being in the champions’ locker room at Augusta National feels like.

“It’s amazing. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself and think, ‘Wow, I get to come back here every year,'” he shared, reflecting on his experience.

He also described hosting the champion’s dinner as a thrill of a lifetime, saying, “We had a wonderful night on Tuesday, it was just remarkable.”

Afterward, he humorously added, “I think I’ll head in now, have a drink, put on my green jacket, and call it a day.”

Now that the pressure of winning his first Masters is behind him, McIlroy showcased his skills with six birdies, maintaining good form throughout the round.

Despite a bogey early on, he never fell below par and demonstrated a sense of comfort on a course that has posed challenges for him in the past.

“After last year, Rory won’t let this slip away,” noted Fred Couples during the round. He even mentioned saying something similar to his caddy around the 12th hole.

McIlroy admitted that his recent victory made competing at Augusta feel less daunting. “Once you win the Masters, it’s easier to win that second one,” he remarked. There’s something about knowing you can unwind in the champions’ locker room with your green jacket that eases the mind.

On the first day, he wasn’t alone in his strong performance; Kurt Kitayama, Jason Day, and Patrick Reed also finished with impressive scores at three under par.

Windham Clark managed to reach three under during his second round as well.

Looking ahead, McIlroy’s next tee time is set for 1:44 p.m. ET on Friday.
