Rory McIlroy had no intention of staying after missing out on a chance to win the U.S. Open.
The celebrity golfer hurriedly left Pinehurst Resort & Country Club after Bryson DeChambeau won the tournament, tossing his clubs into a tournament sponsored vehicle and driving out of the parking lot without speaking to reporters.
Video from Pinehurst showed McIlroy emerging from the clubhouse accompanied by several people.
He went straight to his car, loaded his clubs and other bags into it and then got in himself.
Other video shows McIlroy in the driver’s seat backing up, then seemingly spinning his wheels as he starts to move forward.
He then runs down the road and out of the camera’s view.
The Raleigh News & Observer reported that McIlroy left the course six minutes after DeChambeau made the winning putt.
It was a disappointing day for McIlroy on Sunday, as he missed two putts that could have led to his first major title in a decade and his first U.S. Open victory since 2011.
Instead, he watched as DeChambeau made par on the 18th hole to win his second U.S. Open title.
NBC’s broadcast showed McIlroy’s reaction as he sighed and stood in the middle of the room as the American sank the winning putt, then followed his caddie out of the room.
It’s been a hectic few weeks for McIlroy, with his personal life dominating the headlines, from news of his divorce in May to rumors of a romantic relationship with a golf writer.
Then last week it was revealed that McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, had withdrawn their divorce and McIlroy had filed a notice of voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit.
