Rory McIlroy Faces Intense Crowd Reaction at Ryder Cup
Rory McIlroy’s supporters remained steadfast throughout Sunday at the Ryder Cup.
At Bethpage Black, McIlroy endured a challenging weekend, facing jeers from the audience, leading to a notably tense atmosphere.
As he prepared for a crucial putt on the first green, fans chanted “Amanda! Amanda!” This chant seemed to reference CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis, with whom McIlroy had been linked in speculation over the past year.
The taunts continued as McIlroy went up against Scotty Scheffler in a highly anticipated singles match on Sunday.
Last spring saw rumors swirl following McIlroy’s unexpected filing for divorce after seven years of marriage to Erica Stoll. However, seems they mended their relationship, as she was seen supporting him at Long Island during the tournament.
Throughout the weekend, fans reportedly targeted Stoll, with some even alleging that a drink was thrown from the crowd.
This unsportsmanlike behavior has marred the Ryder Cup narrative this year, drawing considerable attention.
During the heated exchanges, McIlroy was heard telling fans to “close F-K” as they persisted with their teasing.
Despite the unfriendly audience, things were already looking grim for Team USA. On Sunday, the Americans faced a daunting 12-5 deficit, with Europe nearing victory—and their first Ryder Cup win on US soil since 2012.
The competition saw both sides evenly matched after injuries kept European player Victor Hovland and American Harris English sidelined.
Realistically, Team USA needed a miracle to avert what was shaping up to be a disheartening loss. The crowd’s behavior certainly contributed to that unsettling environment.
