Rory McIlroy shot six-under on Saturday with four birdies and an eagle on the par-five fourth hole for a 66, but the Ulster native still trails Matteo Manassero by three strokes heading into Sunday's final round.
McIlroy is tied for second with Billy Horschel at 15 under par.
“I played well. Another good day,” McIlroy said.
“My lowest score this week. No bogeys. Just trying to catch up with Matteo. I know I need a lowest score tomorrow to catch him.”
Manassero shot a 9-under 63 on Saturday, his lowest score of the week, in wet conditions that forced the DP World Tour to enforce preferred lies in the third round. It's no wonder Manassero, Horschel and McIlroy combined for 20 birdies and two eagles on Saturday.
“we [fed off each other midway through] “The round is over,” Manassero said.
“Guys like Rory and Billy and the atmosphere at Wentworth is amazing. It's a really good show and of course you get inspired by it. You get inspired playing with great players. It was one of those really great atmospheres.”
