Rory McIlroy rallies on 'moving day' at the British Open

Portrush, Northern Ireland – Rory McIlroy delivered an impressive performance on Saturday, just as the local fans had hoped. Utilizing the pivotal third round, often referred to as the “moving day,” he made significant strides on the leaderboard.

Starting the day at 3-under par, McIlroy energized the enthusiastic Portrush crowd by achieving a commendable 5-under par 66, placing him seven shots behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler.

His score brought him to 8-under par, which is still six shots behind Scheffler.

McIlroy began strongly, birdieing three of the first four holes, quickly advancing to 6-under par.

Despite experiencing a setback on the back nine, he rebounded with a birdie on the par 5 12th hole, moving to 7-under. A long birdie putt then pushed him to 8-under, and the crowd was buzzing with excitement.

He also managed a clever par save on the challenging par-3 16th hole, often referred to as “Calamity Corner.”

“I got off to a perfect start, going from 3 under to 4,” McIlroy said. “It felt like a dream beginning. The energy was incredible. I think I gave you a decent shot for tomorrow.”

However, he felt he could have done even better, as a lull during the middle stretch of his round held him back somewhat.

“On the front nine, making par on 7 felt like a bogey, and then I hit a bogey on 11,” he added, acknowledging that he played quite a bit.

While he performed well, he recognized the challenge ahead, knowing that catching those ahead would be tough.

“If he keeps playing like he has, it’ll be hard to catch him tomorrow,” McIlroy stated regarding Scheffler.

“Scotty is just incredible,” he remarked, clearly respecting his competitor.
