Rory McIlroy snaps at fan as he melts down at Genesis Invitational

Rory McIlroy's weekend at Torrey Pines didn't go as planned.

The Northern Irishman rolled the Genesis Invitational leaderboard over the weekend thanks to a brutal exhibit of putting, where he finished in 17th place with a 3-under and tie.

He reportedly elicited frustration in one fan on Sunday after suggesting that McIlroy should “denounce your caddy” for missing out on PUTT.

“Close f-k,” McIlroy responded. According to reporter Dan Rappaporthosts the “Danon Golf” podcast.

Harry Diamond has been McIlroy's caddy since 2017, and the two are childhood friends.

The fan taunt came after McIlroy slipped a 12-foot putt past the hole on the right to let the birdie go.

McIlroy was the last on the field in the third round on Saturday and with the shot he scored on Sunday from the third to the last.

It's not the first time Diamond has been attacked due to McIroy's failure after the partnership was analyzed following the 2024 US Open.

McIlroy missed two short putts in Pinehurst's final round, sacrificing his first major for the first time in a decade. His club choice for the par 3 on the 15th that led to McIlroy hitting it on the green and making a bogey was also questioned by former PGA Tour professional Smiley Kaufman and longtime golf instructor Hank Honey.

“You know, that's certainly unfair. Hank Haney has never been in that position. Smiley was in that position once, and I love Smiley, and he was 18 years old and with us. We were with him,” McIlroy said in the defense of Diamond. According to Golf Week.

“But just because Harry isn't as loud or loud as other caddies, it doesn't mean he doesn't say anything and doesn't do anything. Things don't go down my path. These people who sometimes criticize me hope that things don't say anything when they go my path. When they beat Dubai earlier this year, they'll be like Quail Hollow, or Harry or the Two Ryder Cups. Where were they, like the two FedEx Cups that won in? They never say Harry did such a great job when I won, but they always criticized us when we can't win I'm there to do it.

“At the end of the day, they're not there. They're not the ones who hit shots and make decisions. Someone told me once, you never said. Certainly for advice Hank I wouldn't go to honey. I love smileys, but I think I know what I'm doing, and so does Harry.”

Before arriving at Torrey Pines, McIlroy had won a $3.6 million victory at Pebble Beach in an earlier signing event on the PGA Tour.

On Sunday, Ludvig Aberg won the top prize of $4 million for repeated Maverick McNealy with four birdies on the final six holes.
