Focus on Team Europe’s Victory at the Ryder Cup
Rory McIlroy believes the key takeaway from the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black should be Europe’s impressive performance, rather than the raucous crowd that made headlines. McIlroy faced significant heckling during the event, which also involved his wife, Erica Stoll.
“I’ve been following the stories coming out of the Ryder Cup, like everyone else, and unfortunately, I think we’ve lost focus on how well the European teams performed,” McIlroy shared on Wednesday, ahead of the DP World India Championship.
Despite the distractions, McIlroy and his fellow European teammates secured a 15-13 victory over the Americans. He expressed a desire to “shift the narrative back” to celebrate their achievements rather than the chaos surrounding the event.
“I was able to watch the highlights the last two weeks and see how good the European teams were, especially the first two days,” he added.
McIlroy noted that the competition was tight, with exchanges where both teams executed impressive shots: “The Americans hit it close, we hit it close. The Americans holed the putt, we holed the putt over them, and it happened every time. Unfortunately, people don’t seem to remember that.” His frustration stems from wanting to emphasize the skill displayed rather than the misbehavior of fans.
Amid the excitement, McIlroy faced hecklers, once telling them to “shut up,” and he also informed the umpire that he wouldn’t putt until the spectators quieted down.
Looking back on the event, McIlroy praised Stoll for her strength while coping with the unruly crowd, noting that family should be off-limits during events like this. He remarked, “She is a very strong woman and handled everything this week with class, poise, and dignity. We’re going to have a fun and celebratory time tonight.”
The couple shares a 5-year-old daughter, Poppy, and McIlroy has felt her support throughout his career, especially since his previous divorce was annulled in June 2024.
As for the future, the next Ryder Cup is set to be held in Ireland in 2027.
