Rose Bowl files a lawsuit against UCLA for purportedly trying to break the stadium lease

The city of Pasadena, California, along with the Rose Bowl operator, has filed a lawsuit against UCLA over the university’s plans to relocate its college football games. This would involve moving from the historic Rose Bowl, where the Bruins have played for more than four decades, to the newer SoFi Stadium.

The lawsuit accuses the university of a “gross” breach of trust, claiming that this action violates the spirit of their long-term commitment. According to the Los Angeles Times, UCLA’s attorney, David L. Schroeder, recently informed Pasadena attorney Nima Mohebi that the discussions around moving the venue do not amount to a “material breach” of their contract.

In the lawsuit, it’s stated, “This case comes at a time when money too often overshadows meaning and the pursuit of profit threatens to erase the very traditions that give life to institutions. Some promises are too basic to be replaced.” Pasadena officials expressed their expectation for UCLA to adhere to the existing lease, emphasizing a commitment to protect the city’s contractual rights. They voiced disappointment over UCLA’s attempts to terminate the lease.

The statement from the city also highlighted that the Rose Bowl has acted with integrity, fulfilling its obligations and investing heavily in its partnership with UCLA, including recent renovations. The potential fallout from UCLA’s decision could negatively affect the local economy and community.

UCLA’s lease is set to last until 2044, though there is a significant distance from campus to the Rose Bowl—about 42 miles—while SoFi Stadium is roughly 19 miles away. The Bruins have faced challenges with attendance at home games, drawing an average of 35,000 fans, even though the Rose Bowl can accommodate over 89,000. SoFi Stadium offers slightly less capacity than the Rose Bowl.

Notably, UCLA switched from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten last year, joining teams like USC, Washington, and Oregon. The Rose Bowl itself has been hosting the famous Rose Bowl Game since 1922, with only a couple of exceptions throughout its history.
