Rose Chan of the United States team moved up eight spots on the leaderboard in the third round of the women’s golf competition. She shot a five-under 67 to advance to the 2024 Olympics with a seven-under total.
The former Stanford golfer is at nine under par, two strokes behind leaders Morgane Methot of Switzerland and Lydia Ko of New Zealand.
Zhang made three birdies in the first nine holes and finished in 33 strokes. He made a big eagle on the 14th hole, but then made a double bogey on the par-4 15th hole. But the double bogey didn’t matter, as he made an eagle on the par-5 18th hole and finished the round on a high note.
Zhang is one of the few players with experience playing at Le Golf National: the 21-year-old won the World Amateur Team Championship in 2022.
She used that knowledge to conquer the course. She is becoming more familiar with the course with each passing day, and it shows. Chan knows this is a golf course she will play every day.
“Especially on this golf course, I don’t think it’s good to get too far ahead of what’s in front of you,” Zhang said. “Especially in today’s conditions. It was pretty tough to play. I just have to make sure I hit the fairways and the greens and make the putts when I have the chance. That’s all I can do.”
The two-time LPGA winner is pleased with her position on the leaderboard after 54 holes, and with a medal in sight, that feeling will continue heading into the final day.
“I don’t think I need to change anything. For me personally, I think the most important thing is what I can do and what I can control,” she said. “I’m here to enjoy the effort, and I know I’ll have to work hard tomorrow, but I just have to live in the moment.”
Zhang will play in the final group on Saturday with Metrau and Ko. They tee off at 6:39 a.m. ET, with Zhang looking to overturn a two-stroke deficit to win the gold medal.
