NASCAR Community Supports Darrell Waltrip
The NASCAR community has come together to support Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip, who recently announced his diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), potentially complicated by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Waltrip’s family shared the news, and fellow NASCAR driver Ross Chastain expressed his sadness, noting that Waltrip has been a significant figure throughout his life.
“It’s sad, really. I’ve known Darrell’s name as long as I can remember, and I’ve had the chance to meet him a few times. It’s just a tough reality to face — aging and everything,” Chastain said in an interview. He added that he hasn’t spoken to anyone directly about Waltrip’s condition, but the news has hit home for many.
Chastain assured that he and the racing community will do whatever they can to support Waltrip. The family mentioned in their statement that Waltrip’s condition is likely due to injuries from his successful racing career. They also conveyed a positive note about his current state, sharing that he’s mainly experiencing minor symptoms.
“While this disease will inevitably progress, thankfully it is currently limited to some minor noticeable symptoms,” Waltrip and his wife, Stevie, stated. “He will be stepping further away from the public limelight, but rest assured, Darrell is happy and otherwise healthy — enjoying time with Stevie, their two daughters, and three grandchildren. We truly appreciate your continued prayers and support!”
Interestingly, they signed the statement with Waltrip’s famous catchphrase, “Boogity! Boogity! Boogity!”—a phrase he used as a NASCAR commentator for many years until he retired in 2019. Although he hasn’t been in the booth much, he made a brief appearance at Darlington in March, delivering that classic line.
As a former driver, Waltrip achieved remarkable success, including being a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and a Daytona 500 winner, boasting 84 Cup Series victories — the fifth highest in the sport’s history.
