Ruben Diaz expressed his frustration following Manchester City’s 0-0 draw against Southampton, criticizing the latter’s tactics. With Southampton controlling just 28% of the ball, City’s hopes of finishing in the top five for a Champions League spot remain uncertain.
Manager Pep Guardiola shared Diaz’s irritation, particularly regarding Southampton’s time-wasting strategies. “It’s frustrating,” Diaz remarked. “Every point matters in such a tight race, and facing a team like this is just annoying.
“They didn’t even really try. It feels like they just wanted to sit back instead of going for the win. That’s not good for the game or for them,” he added, hinting at the lackluster approach from Southampton.
Diaz pointed out instances of time-wasting by Southampton’s goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, reflecting on a past match where they played quite differently. “It felt like there were so many instances of players going down to kill the game’s rhythm,” he said.
He emphasized the need for City to adapt and improve. “We’ve got to be more dynamic and quick. Every time we face teams like this, it gets tricky.”
Guardiola, meanwhile, took a slightly different stance, stating, “They can play however they want.” He acknowledged the variety of styles they’ve encountered over the years, noting that it’s up to City to break through. “We just have to accept how they operate,” he added.
Diaz highlighted the challenge of facing teams that play defensively, noting how it limits their chances. “When they stack the back line and the strikers press us, it creates a tough situation,” he said. Nonetheless, he accepted that this style of play is part of football.
Following the firing of Ivan Juric, interim manager Simon Rusk took pride in the draw, stating, “We aimed to frustrate City.” He acknowledged the need for a different strategy, expressing that going head-to-head with a powerhouse like City would likely result in a loss. “We have to find a way to compete,” he concluded.
