Rubio and Vance Criticize Berlin for Decision to Designate AfD as an ‘Extremist’ Party

The Trump administration has criticized Berlin’s recent actions, accusing it of tyranny after Germany’s top intelligence agency labeled the populist AFD party as a “radical” group due to its positions on mass migration. This designation could lead to increased surveillance of the party by various governments.

On Friday, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BFV), operating under the Home Office, declared the Alternative für Deutschland (AFD) a “right-wing extremist” organization. This classification allows for enhanced monitoring of the Anti-Mass Migration Party, including observing private meetings and intercepting communications.

In a statement, the BFV justified its decision by specifically pointing out that the AFD’s positions on immigration from Muslim countries were “incompatible with Germany’s democratic principles.”

“This can be observed in the numerous hostile remarks made by key party officials against foreigners, minorities, and Muslims. Their ongoing resentment towards refugees and immigrants only serves to fuel prejudice, anxiety, and fear against these groups,” the statement read.

“Such sentiments are often reflected in derogatory phrases like ‘knife immigration’ and the blanket generalizations made by prominent AFD members linking ethnicity to violence.”

The agency also stated that “German citizens with backgrounds from Muslim countries are not regarded as full members of the German populace, as defined by the party.”

This decision follows the AFD’s rise to become the largest opposition party after achieving its best-ever results in the February federal elections, where it topped the polls.

The party’s growing support has ignited public anger toward the government’s extensive migration policies and the recent surge of terrorist incidents linked to asylum seekers, primarily from Muslim nations.

High-ranking officials from the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have accused the German government of attempting to dismiss the party for political motives.

“The AFD is the most popular party in Germany and truly represents the people in East Germany. Yet, bureaucrats are working to undermine it,” Vance stated. He added on X, “The Berlin Wall was torn down together; it wasn’t rebuilt by outsiders but rather by the German establishment.”

Rubio also weighed in, stating, “Germany has granted surveillance agencies new powers to investigate their opposition. This isn’t democracy; it’s a form of tyranny.”

“The real extremists are not the popular AFD, which came in second in the recent elections. It’s the disastrous open-border immigration policies that the AFD opposes. Germany needs to reassess its direction.”

The German Foreign Ministry responded, claiming that the BFV’s move to expand surveillance on the AFD, which had previously been monitored as a “suspected extremist group,” was not an infringement on democracy. Instead, it was framed as a necessary step to protect the constitution and uphold the rule of law.

“We learned from history that we must act against right-wing extremism,” added the ministry.

Nancy Pheaser, the Minister of Home Affairs, asserted—speaking out in her capacity overseeing the intelligence agency—“There has been no political influence on the new report; the BFV acted entirely independently.”

Alice Weidel, co-leader of the AFD, whose relationship is with a woman from Sri Lanka, countered by saying “The intelligence agency serves the ruling government, which is responsible for illegal mass immigration, rising crime rates, high taxes, and energy prices. As the strongest party in the polls, they want to suppress opposition and free speech.”

The decision to classify the AFD as “extremist” does not immediately mean a ban; such action can only be taken by Congress or the Federal Constitutional Court. However, it might pave the way for that possibility.

In recent months, other populist leaders in Europe have faced bans, such as the disqualification of Karin Georgeque from Romanian elections and Marine Le Pen’s five-year ban, which has impacted her presidential campaign.
