Rubio Calls Israel’s Strike in Damascus a Misunderstanding
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Israel’s recent airstrike on Syria’s capital, Damascus, as a “misunderstanding,” especially in light of rising tensions this week.
Rubio addressed reporters while at a bilateral meeting with Bahrain’s crown prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa. He noted that the situation is quite complex, mentioning the longstanding competition among various groups in southwestern Syria. “There’s, I think, a historic conflict here—rooted in different beliefs. It can lead to unfortunate misunderstandings between the Israeli and Syrian sides,” he explained.
Rubio mentioned he has been in touch with both parties during the ongoing conflict, adding that Syria could potentially become a source of hope for the Middle East, especially following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last December.
Recent reports indicated that the Israeli strikes damaged the Syrian Ministry of Defense headquarters, resulting in three fatalities and injuring nearly 30 others. The Israeli government took this action partially to protect the Druze community in southwestern Syria, an area bordering the Golan Heights, where the UN presence is significant. Concerns arose as reports surfaced that the Syrian government was targeting Druze minority groups in the region.
Since the acquisition of territory by a former terrorist group earlier this month, worries about minority rights have intensified. Interestingly, the Trump administration had just recently lifted the designation of that group.
Increasing Tensions in Southern Syria
There have been reports of increased violence aimed at the Druze community in southern Syria, where clashes have reportedly escalated due to earlier incidents. The friction began when a Druze man was attacked while trying to pass through a Bedouin checkpoint in Sweida.
What followed appears to have been a brutal response, with the Syrian government deploying forces to restore order. Sadly, estimates suggest that between 30 and 90 individuals have lost their lives in these confrontations this week. Footage seems to show government forces not only attacking the Druze community but also humiliating individuals in the process, forcing some to shave their mustaches.
The situation remains dire. Civilians are facing horrific conditions, raising significant concern among advocates for their rights.
Rubio expressed cautious optimism, stating, “We think we’re heading for a real de-escalation, and hopefully it will help Syria rebuild.” He expressed a desire for tangible progress soon, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
