Rubio Imposes Sanctions on UN Palestine Envoy After ICC ‘Lawfare’ Move

Sanctions Imposed on UN Human Rights Official

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced financial sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur, on Wednesday. He claimed her efforts to bring American and Israeli officials before the International Criminal Court (ICC) went too far.

This action intensified Washington’s legal confrontation with the ICC, following a previous move that sanctioned four judges involved in what the Trump administration termed politicized prosecutions. Albanese, who serves as the UN’s human rights envoy for Palestinian territories, had called for the ICC to investigate alleged actions by the U.S. and Israel, suggesting they were linked to a so-called “genocide economy.”

Rubio stated on X, “I have imposed sanctions on the UN Human Rights Council. Actions against us and Israeli officials are unacceptable. We continue to support our partners in their right to self-defense.”

Albanese stirred controversy recently by urging international businesses to sever ties with Israel, warning that they could be complicit in a “genocide economy,” a claim that was dismissed by Israeli officials as baseless.

The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, criticized the sanctions as harmful to good governance and accused the U.S. of undermining judicial independence.

This designation is part of a broader strategy initiated by Rubio in June, aimed at protecting U.S. sovereignty and warding off future legal actions from the ICC, particularly regarding U.S. conduct in Afghanistan and the actions of Israeli leaders. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed approval of Rubio’s decision, calling it a “clear message” to the UN regarding perceived anti-Israel bias.

Rubio indicated that the administration’s efforts are ongoing and hinted that others may face similar sanctions if they pursue actions he views as legal overreach against U.S. allies.
