Marco Rubio’s Remarks in Athens

Last month, Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that he currently has “no plans” regarding a potential 2028 presidential campaign, indicating uncertainty about what lies ahead.

A source familiar with his situation stated that Rubio is “still young and smart in both policy and politics,” suggesting he’s keeping options open for the future. If asked about interest in a 2032 or 2036 run, he might respond positively.

During a recent speech at the Acropolis in Athens, despite his personal uncertainties for the next few years, Rubio expressed a clear vision for America’s direction right now.

He stressed the importance of Western countries, particularly the U.S., to pursue national strength openly, prioritize their citizens, and stop feeling guilty about their exceptionalism. He called for a return to the “classical understanding” that power involves not only protection but also the credibility to use it when necessary.

In his address, Rubio acknowledged the deep historical ties between the United States and ancient Greek civilization, highlighting how much the contributions of Greek society have influenced American values and Western civilization as a whole.

“The history of America carries the fingerprints of antiquity,” he noted, drawing connections between the classical civilizations and the evolution of the U.S.

Rubio elaborated on how Athenians and Romans shaped America from a nascent nation into a continental power.

However, his speech went beyond this historical association; it was a call to action. He asserted that America and the entire civilization are at an “inflection point.” He pointed out that national interests still hold weight in today’s world, international peace cannot be taken for granted, and the competition among great powers has intensified. Additionally, new threats are emerging, making the rebuilding of alliances and institutions more crucial than ever.

On this European tour, which included discussions about NATO and other partnerships, Rubio stated in a press conference with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis that European nations must take on more responsibility for their defense as Greece seeks to meet its NATO commitments.

He also shared positive developments, such as a recently signed memorandum with Greece to enhance counterterrorism cooperation and strengthen joint security efforts.

Echoing themes from his previous speeches, Rubio indicated that these alliances aren’t meant to infringe on national sovereignty but rather to reinforce it. “We want to win together. We must win together,” he concluded.
