New Security Assurance Proposal for Ukraine Led by Marco Rubio
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to lead a newly established joint committee aimed at creating a security assurance proposal for Ukraine, according to information shared by administrative authorities with News Nation on Tuesday.
This committee includes representatives from Ukraine, European nations, and NATO officials.
The formation of this committee was agreed upon during a meeting at the White House on Monday that included President Trump and seven European leaders visiting Washington.
Rubio’s appointment as chair of the committee was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal. It’s been indicated that the security guarantees for Ukraine consist of four key components: air defense, military presence, the halting of combat, and the pursuit of weapons, as shared by European officials familiar with the discussions.
Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, was one of three U.S. officials who participated in a closed-door meeting with a Russian delegation led by President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last Friday.
On Monday, Trump engaged in a phone conversation with Putin shortly after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the European leaders at the White House. Trump mentioned that while speaking to Putin, neither Zelensky nor the European officials were present, as he deemed it impolite to do so in front of them given the less-than-friendly dynamics between them.
The phone call lasted around 40 minutes, during which Trump informed Putin that his administration would arrange a meeting between him and Zelensky. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated that Trump would be invited to Moscow for discussions, as he has not dismissed consultations with Ukraine.
Addressing the ongoing Russian-Ukraine conflict, Trump emerged on Tuesday, suggesting that the U.S. could provide air support to Kyiv as part of the security assurance package.
“We’re ready to assist, particularly in the air, as we’re equipped in ways they may not be,” Trump stated.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Minister cautioned NATO leaders against mobilizing NATO forces in Ukraine within the framework of a peace agreement.
