Rubio writes off Biden southern border executive order on asylum as a ‘joke’

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has joined the chorus of Republican lawmakers mocking President Biden’s executive order to limit asylum admissions at the southern border, calling the plan a “travesty” that would do little to reduce the number of people crossing the border even if fully implemented.

“Biden’s new border ‘plan’ is a joke,” Rubio said in his speech Tuesday. post On social media platform X.

“Even if Biden actually fully enforces this, which he won’t, we’ll still have nearly a million people crossing the border illegally per year, on top of the 10 million we’ve already allowed in over the past three years,” he said.

The order would bar asylum seekers traveling between ports of entry during times like the current seven-day average of migrants above 2,500.

The administration has long been criticized by conservatives for not doing enough to curb the influx of migrants. The executive order was announced after a bipartisan border bill was blocked for a second time by Senate Republicans.

In April, there were 179,725 encounters by Border Patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico border. according to To Customs and Border Protection.

Biden’s actions on Tuesday have drawn condemnation from both parties.

“I’m disappointed that the president has chosen this direction,” Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Barragan (D-Calif.) said ahead of the bill’s announcement.

The American Civil Liberties Union immediately threatened to challenge the measure in court.

Rubio, who is seen as a possible running mate for former President Trump in the 2024 presidential election, has been more aggressive in his attacks on Biden, calling him a “mad man.”
