Rublev Questions Fine for Foul Language at US Open

Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev isn’t pleased with the $3,000 fine he received during his second match at the US Open.

Ranked 15th in Men’s Singles, Rublev was penalized for using inappropriate language while competing against American Tristan Boyer. He expressed his frustration, claiming it feels excessive to face such a hefty fine for a few words spoken in the heat of the moment.

“It really depends on the situation,” Rublev shared before advancing in the tournament. “When you’re talking to yourself, sometimes things slip out. I mean, I don’t think you should address the judge with bad words, but when you’re out there competing, emotions run high.”

He remarked that it’s quite common for athletes to vent during critical moments, saying, “This happens in all sports. It’s just part of the game.” He believes that, whether you’re playing tennis or just going through life, you’re bound to let something slip when under pressure.

Rublev isn’t the only Russian player to face penalties at this year’s US Open. Daniil Medvedev was notably fined $42,500 for his outburst during his first-round match against Benjamin Bonzi, where he was upset over a call involving a photographer crossing the court.

Rublev, who is also Medvedev’s children’s godfather, offered support after the incident. He stated, “If he wants to change, he has friends and family who are here to help him.”

On Saturday, Rublev triumphed over Coleman Wong in a nail-biting five-set match, overcoming an initial setback in the first set. He lost that set 6-2 but then fought back to win the next two before ultimately sealing victory in the fifth.

Looking ahead, Rublev is set to face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is currently ranked 25th in men’s singles, in the next round of the tournament.
