Rules analyst questioned about disputed Bills interception

Mariucci Questions Overturned Interception Call

Former NFL coach Steve Mariucci backed analyst Walt Anderson while raising concerns about a controversial interception during the Bills vs. Broncos overtime playoff game. The incident involved Brandin Cooks initially appearing to make a catch, only for Jaquan McMillan to intercept the ball.

Mariucci expressed curiosity about why referee Karl Chaffers didn’t communicate directly with fans, both in the stadium and those watching on TV, after the pivotal decision.

Anderson responded by clarifying the behind-the-scenes review process. He stated, “You have to understand that every play is scrutinized by several people from different angles. The league’s guidelines require them to verify whether the on-field call was correct and, if it is, to keep the game moving without unnecessary delays.” He added that he understood the desire for more clarity from Chaffers, but felt CBS did a decent job explaining the ruling on the play.

Mariucci, however, insisted on hearing from Chaffers instead of relying on analysts like Tony Romo for clarification.

As the overtime ticked down, the Bills faced a crucial 2nd-and-11 from their own 38-yard line. Josh Allen threw a pass intended for Cooks, which, if caught, might have led to a game-winning field goal. But when Cooks fell to the ground, it appeared the ball was dislodged.

According to Anderson, that was a key moment, as the ball never actually hit the ground during the interception play. McMillan retained possession, leading to Will Lutz kicking the field goal for a 33-30 Broncos win.

Throughout the segment, Anderson emphasized that multiple observers in New York monitor every angle of the play, part of the NFL’s significant investment in their technology, like the Hawkeye system. He noted that they assess whether the ball is loose immediately or if control is regained by the defender, confirming the interception ruling.

Amid all this, Bills coach Sean McDermott had a strong reaction to the decision, highlighting the frustration surrounding the call.
