Russell Brand Acknowledges Having Sex With 16-Year-Old Amid Rape and Sexual Assault Trial

Russell Brand has acknowledged engaging in sexual relations with a 16-year-old when he was 30, emphasizing that this is legal under UK law, where the age of consent is 16.

During an appearance on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” while facing multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault, Brand reflected on his past. “The plain fact is that in the UK, where I’m from, the age of consent is 16. And yes, I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30,” he stated. He noted that he was quite different back then, describing himself as an immature, younger version of himself.

Brand recognized a significant power dynamic in his actions, admitting, “I think it’s exploitative. I realize now that my past sexual conduct was quite selfish. I didn’t consider how it affected others.”

He added, “I was predominantly focused on my own desires.” He mentioned having consensual relations with many women, although he conceded that there might be a debate about the appropriateness of that. “Consent is what’s crucial,” he explained, before revealing, “the fame and addiction I experienced created situations where consent was easily granted, leading me to act foolishly and exploitatively towards women.”

Brand expressed remorse, stating, “That is wrong. It’s something that should be addressed and redeemed.” However, he has also contested the rape and assault allegations against him, stating, “I fundamentally oppose the notion that this is a matter of overriding consent.”

He elaborated, “What transpired was that consent was, in a way, directed.” He attributed this to the privileges that come with fame, saying that being charismatic can influence consent in a particular direction.

Despite this acknowledgment of poor choices, Brand reiterated, “That doesn’t justify it; it’s actually wrong. It’s a reflection of selfishness.”

Four women have accused him of serious offenses, including rape and emotional abuse, with incidents reported from 1999 to 2005. Brand’s trial is scheduled for October 12, 2026.
