Giants’ Quarterback Decisions: Russell Wilson and Jackson Dart
The New York Giants are currently favoring veteran quarterback Russell Wilson for this season. However, rookie Jackson Dart is closely following him on the team’s depth chart.
Wilson had previously shared his thoughts with a news outlet about Dart’s abilities, reflecting on his own rookie journey. He noted how he had outperformed veteran quarterback Matt Flynn to secure his starting position with the Seattle Seahawks back in 2012.
“Jackson is a dedicated worker and a solid teammate,” Wilson commented in July. “He has had a great college career. My main focus is to help the New York Giants win every day,” he added, expressing a commitment to the team.
Both Wilson and Dart are stepping into their first season with the Giants. Wilson signed a one-year contract worth $21 million during the offseason, while Dart was drafted 25th overall after the team backed up in the first round to select him.
Wilson has been positioned as the starter as the season begins, but Dart has earned the second-string spot thanks to impressive performances during the preseason.
Looking back, when Wilson took over the starting role from Flynn in 2012, Flynn had just signed a lucrative three-year deal worth $26 million. Wilson, a third-round pick that year, surprised many by beating out the established veteran before the first game.
For this season, Wilson retained his starting job in week one, even as the Giants fell to the Washington Commanders. Giants head coach Brian Daball has confirmed that Wilson will continue as the starting quarterback for Week 2 when they face the Dallas Cowboys.
