Wilson Responds to Payton’s Jab
Russell Wilson reacted to comments made by Sean Payton after the Broncos’ recent loss to the Giants. Wilson seemed taken aback by Payton’s remarks, implying it was surprising that old grievances were still being aired, stating, “Class doesn’t matter…but I wasn’t surprised…I had no idea that over 15 years later, they were still hunting for bounty through the media #LetsRide.” This was in reference to the Saints’ Bountygate scandal, which led to Payton’s suspension for the entire 2012 season.
After the Broncos pulled off a narrow 33-32 victory over the Giants, Payton spoke during the press conference about the quarterback situation in New York, seemingly taking a dig at Wilson, with whom he had disagreements during his sole season in Denver in 2023.
Payton praised rookie quarterback Jackson Dart, who stepped in as the Giants’ starter after Wilson began the season. He remarked, “They found a little bit of a spark with that quarterback.”
Continuing his comments, Payton mentioned a conversation with Giants owner John Mara, hinting that he would have preferred to compete against Wilson rather than Dart.
Wilson’s tenure with the Broncos was challenging; he finished his second season with a disappointing record of 7-8. By the end of that season, he was replaced by Jarrett Stidham in the final two games.
Following his time in Denver, the Broncos expended $85 million in salary cap space to release Wilson, who then played for the Steelers in 2024 before joining the Giants.
As for his performance, Wilson faced difficulties as New York’s starter, passing for 778 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions, while completing a mere 58.9% of his throws.
Payton noted that since Dart assumed the starting role, he had reinvigorated the Giants, who stood at 2-2 as of Week 4.
