Russell Wilson wants to stay with Broncos, win two more Super Bowls

Russell Wilson was threatened with being benched if he didn’t agree to a contract adjustment.

He was ultimately traded to the Broncos for the final two games of the 2023 season in what Sean Payton called a football decision in Denver’s first year after Nathaniel Hackett was fired in Wilson’s first year. He was placed on the bench.

The unstable Broncos, who haven’t made the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50 eight years ago, appear to be doing everything they can to show Wilson is no longer needed.

But with rumors that the team could pay as much as $85 million in dead cap just to let Wilson go, the Super Bowl winner and nine-time Pro Bowler decided to stay with the Broncos and guide them to glory. He says he wants to lead the way.

“Honestly, I’m more fired up than ever, especially with what I’ve been through the last two years,” Wilson said. “I Am Athlete” Podcast When asked if he still has an obsession with former Jet Brandon Marshall. “Whether it’s Denver or somewhere else, I hope it’s Denver and I hope I can finish there. But in describing his goals for the Broncos, the 35-year-old Wilson said he wants to be on a team that needs him.

“For me, it’s about winning. I want to win two in the next five years. [Super Bowls], I want to taste the coldness of that trophy again. I love this city and everything else, but I also want to be somewhere that wants you. All I want to do is win, that’s all I care about. ”

The Broncos acquired Wilson from the Seahawks two years ago and gave him a five-year, $242.5 million contract extension.

Payton joins the Broncos after a disastrous first season with the team in which he posted career lows in completion percentage (60.5) and touchdowns (16) and Hackett was fired after just 15 games. It seemed to be attracting the attention of buyers. regret.

Wilson, who won Super Bowl XLVIII with Seattle by defeating Denver in February 2014, told reporters in December that the Broncos beat the Chiefs to improve to 3-5, then in October during their bye week. He said he told him that he would be benched. He will be out for the remainder of the 2025 season unless his $37 million injury guarantee is changed.

“I couldn’t believe it at first. I thought, ‘This can’t be real,'” Wilson said on the podcast. “I got a call saying, ‘If you don’t change my injury coverage, I’m going to bench you for the next nine games.'” … They want to defer my injury coverage and cancel it for the rest of the year. That’s what I think. That way, if I get hurt, they don’t have to pay for it.

“I didn’t want to set a precedent for players to get their injury guarantees lifted. … That wasn’t my intention. So when they said, ‘We’re going to put you on the bench, we’re going to put you on the bench,’ I said, ‘Okay, that’s it. If that’s what you want.”

Wilson said Payton then told him to forget about the request and start playing “Monday Night Football” against the Bills as if nothing had happened.
