Russell Wilson's brief statement as interest in Jaxson Dart grows

Giants’ Quarterback Situation Post-Bypass

Russell Wilson is facing mounting pressure after a disappointing start to the season, but seems to be handling it well.

Following a tough debut against the Commanders that ended 21-6, Wilson shared a brief message focusing on mental strength with his 5.4 million followers. His words were simple: “Mentally tough.”

In that opening game for the Giants, Wilson had a rough outing, completing 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards, without any touchdowns or interceptions, and he was sacked twice.

When questioned about the pressure he felt, Wilson emphasized concentrating on controllable factors. “I thought we were competing hard today… They halted us in the red zone, and I think that was the key point of this game,” he remarked.

Coach Brian Daboll, whose record stands at 1-3 in this early matchup, confirmed on Monday that Wilson would start against the Cowboys in Week 2, after previously withholding a commitment.

“It’s an emotional game; it’s a tough game,” Daboll explained. “Deciding on these matters, especially with any position, needs a clear mind. The loss isn’t solely on Russell. We all need to improve – coaching and playing – but Russell remains the starter.”

In light of the Giants’ defeat, some analysts are advocating for a quarterback change to Jaxson Dart, the team’s 25th overall pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, who showed promise during the preseason.

“You need to make the switch to Dart because Russell Wilson just isn’t cutting it anymore,” Rex Ryan stated on ESPN’s “Get Up” Monday morning. “The timing isn’t perfect, but nobody’s afraid of good players. If you let Dart have a shot and he performs well, we all believe he has the potential. He looked significantly better than Wilson during the preseason. What’s the worst that could happen at this point? You continue with a player who isn’t delivering? That’s just not sensible.”

Dart had three touchdowns and zero interceptions over three preseason games, clearly displaying potential.

Having started the season as Wilson’s backup, Dart indicated that his perspective shifted to being the best teammate possible for Wilson, who spent last season in Pittsburgh.

“Russ has filled this role really well, and he has played at an elite level. I want the team to win, so I’m focusing on maximizing my skills,” Dart commented.

The Giants are set to face the Cowboys this coming Sunday and will then host the Chiefs on the following Sunday night (September 21).
