Russell Wilson is ready to hit the ground running.
The Steelers quarterback was listed as a full participant in Wednesday's practice after being sidelined for the first five weeks of the season with a calf issue.
In the absence of Wilson, who the Steelers signed to a one-year deal this offseason after parting ways with the expensive Broncos, Pittsburgh moved forward with former Bears quarterback Justin Fields under center.
The Steelers got off to a 3-0 start with the former first-round pick (acquired in March via trade with Chicago), but the team has dropped its past two games, most recently losing 20 to the Cowboys on Sunday. They lost 17-1. At home.
Wilson, 35, was named the starting QB to open the season, but it remains to be seen whether the Steelers will replace him in that position.
The Steelers' website reported Wednesday that Wilson will be making the second team and Fields, 25, will be starting, so head coach Mike Tomlin is wondering how the nine-time Pro Bowler will fare in practice. It will be worth paying attention to.
“I think this is a hypothetical conversation, like he can run through all the schematics and put together consecutive days until Russ gets to a point where he's happy with what we're seeing.” Tomlin said. According to steelers.com.
“We will continue to move forward with our relationship with Justin until these things are justified. We will then make decisions accordingly.”
Wilson saw limited action in the preseason and did not throw a touchdown.
Last year, his final season in Denver, he threw 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Through five games this season, Fields has thrown five touchdowns and one interception, completing 67.6 percent of his passes. He also went for three points.
The Raiders host the Steelers on Sunday afternoon.
