Russian Airstrikes Near Ukraine’s Border
Early on Sunday, Russia conducted airstrikes in western Ukraine, targeting the Lviv region, which is close to the Polish border. This assault involved missiles and drones, raising concerns given its proximity to NATO territory.
According to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, the city experienced a severe barrage overnight. Reports indicate that the strikes may represent the most significant attack on Lviv since the onset of the conflict.
Witnesses described the situation as dire, with one source commenting that the city has been enduring “massive attacks for about four hours,” and that the attacks were ongoing. Various explosions could be heard, accompanied by thick black smoke and unpleasant odors filling the streets.
In response to recent threats, Polish officials have escalated air patrols after unconfirmed sightings of Russian drones in multiple NATO nations. The Polish military has assured that their air defense systems are fully operational, ready to respond to any potential threat.
The Polish operating order stated these measures aim to secure airspace and protect citizens, especially those near vulnerable regions.
NATO’s eastern members remain on high alert following Poland’s interception of a Russian drone last month. Reports indicate a series of drone incursions between 19 and 23 in that timeframe, with several shot down by Polish defenses.
Moreover, there were accounts of Russian MIG-31 fighter jets breaching airspace in Estonia and drone activity over Romania shortly after. In light of these developments, President Trump issued a warning about the possibility of U.S. intervention should Russian aggression escalate further in the region.
