Russian Strikes on Ukraine Result in Casualties

KYIV, Ukraine – Officials reported that at least two individuals were killed due to Russian strikes on Ukraine during the overnight hours leading into Sunday. This occurs just after Moscow dismissed Germany’s requests to de-escalate tensions with NATO.

On Saturday, Russia’s foreign minister downplayed what is believed to be the first direct conversation with his German counterpart since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This interaction took place amid the U.N. General Assembly’s annual meeting, as the aerial conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to rage on without a hint of abating.

Recently, relations between Russia and Germany have deteriorated, particularly following an attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport last month, which Berlin attributed to the Kremlin.

With the front-line situation remaining largely static since last year, Moscow has intensified its attacks on Ukraine using cruise and ballistic missiles, powerful glide bombs, and jet-powered drones. In retaliation, Kyiv’s long-range drones have struck Russian oil refineries and businesses.

In Kyiv, Ukraine’s emergency services reported that a man was found dead after a Russian drone targeted a non-residential building overnight. Additionally, another drone hit a vehicle repair shop, resulting in a fire that firefighters battled into early Sunday.

The southern Odesa region, surrounding Ukraine’s primary Black Sea port, also faced multiple strikes overnight, killing one person and injuring two, as per local military administration chief, Oleh Kiper.

Following the meeting in New York, Lavrov showed little regard for discussions initiated by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, stating that Wadephul merely reiterated Germany’s condemnation of Russia.

“You can decide for yourself if that qualifies as dialogue,” Lavrov commented.

Wadephul indicated a willingness to improve relations but emphasized that it would require genuine commitment from Russian leadership to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, as noted by a German delegation official.

A significant majority of U.N. member states have condemned Moscow’s invasion, while the Kremlin refers to the conflict as a “special military operation” aimed at bolstering Russia’s security and safeguarding the rights of Russian speakers.
