Deadly Drone Strike in Ukraine
A Russian drone strike in northeastern Ukraine reportedly hit a passenger bus on Saturday, resulting in nine deaths and four injuries, according to Ukrainian officials.
This incident occurred just hours after both Russian and Ukrainian representatives met for their first direct peace discussions in years. Unfortunately, they couldn’t come to an agreement on a ceasefire regarding the ongoing conflict that began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The Ukrainian national police shared images that display the scene of the attack in Bilopiria city, located in the Smie region, which is close to the Russian border, about six miles from active combat zones.
The Sammy Regional Administration called this action “another war crime by Russia,” noting that it was a targeted strike against civilian transport which posed no military threat.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described this strike as an “intentional killing of civilians.” In response, Bilopiria has declared a mourning period from Saturday to Monday, with local community leader Yurii Zarko referring to the day of the attack as “Black Saturday.”
Local reports indicate that those on the bus had recently evacuated from Bilopiria when the drone struck. The casualties included mostly elderly women, which is particularly tragic. The injured were taken to a hospital in the regional capital, Smee, where three were reported to be in serious condition.
Earlier that morning, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its forces had come under attack in the Smie area, approximately 31 miles southeast of Bilopiria, but didn’t mention the drone attack.
The implications of this event on ongoing peace efforts remain uncertain. On Friday, talks were held in Turkey to establish a temporary ceasefire, but they ended swiftly without any resolution. This was notably the first in-person meeting since the early days of the conflict.
While both sides agreed to a significant prisoner exchange, significant disagreements still persist regarding the conditions needed to conclude the conflict. Ukraine, backed by its Western allies, seeks a temporary ceasefire as a precursor to peace talks. On the other hand, Russia opposes such measures, leaving a ceasefire elusive.
In Turkey, both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each. The Ukrainian Prime Minister noted discussions about a ceasefire and proposed future meetings between their leaders.
An aide for Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that both nations would prepare detailed proposals for a ceasefire, following Ukraine’s suggestion for a national meeting, which Russia has shown interest in.
Zelensky mentioned that he had discussed negotiations involving former President Donald Trump as well as leaders from France, Germany, the UK, and Poland, emphasizing the need for “severe sanctions” if Russia does not comply with demands for a complete ceasefire.
He made these statements while participating in a gathering with leaders from 47 European nations in Tirana, Albania, to discuss various issues including security and defense. Notable attendees included French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
“We must keep up the pressure on Russia until they are ready to end the war,” Zelensky affirmed.
