Drone Strike in Zaporizhzhya Claims Three Lives

KYIV, Ukraine — A Russian drone attack in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhya region left three individuals dead overnight, as confirmed by authorities on Thursday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned that Moscow appears to be gearing up for another large-scale assault, coinciding with upcoming U.S.-mediated peace talks this weekend.

Emergency services reported that a strike in Zaporizhia ignited a significant fire in an apartment building.

Meanwhile, two individuals sustained injuries in the central Dnipropetrovsk region as firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to control the blaze, officials noted.

According to President Zelensky, Ukrainian intelligence indicates that Russia is assembling its forces for a substantial aerial attack. He pointed out that previous large-scale strikes have involved over 800 drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles targeting Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure.

Zelensky expressed concerns that such ongoing assaults are damaging the credibility of peace negotiations. “All Russian attacks serve that purpose,” he remarked late Wednesday.

Nearly four years since Russia initiated its extensive invasion of Ukraine, daily bombardments of civilian areas continue, happening along a front line about 1,000 km (600 miles) long, despite global denunciation and efforts to cease hostilities.

Negotiations are set to resume on Sunday, but skepticism remains regarding Russia’s willingness to pursue peace.

The European Union’s leading diplomat criticized Russia for not taking the discussions seriously and called for increased pressure on Moscow to concede. “The uptick in attacks on Ukraine indicates it’s stalled on the battlefield and is now striking civilians,” remarked Kaja Karas during a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

He emphasized that Europe must fully engage in the negotiations to secure its future security concerning Ukraine. Although reconciliation efforts have been predominantly led by the Trump administration over the past year, European leaders worry their voices may go unheard.

According to a recent report from an international think tank, the tally of soldiers killed, injured, or missing on both sides may reach 2 million by spring, with Russia experiencing the highest troop fatalities of any major power since World War II.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov revealed that Russia deployed over 6,000 drones in Ukraine just last month. He indicated that Russia is consistently enhancing its drone capabilities and strategies, prompting Ukraine to adapt its air defense plans, though specific details were not disclosed.
