KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian drone attack on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, killed at least seven people overnight, including three children, Kharkiv region governor Ole Sinyevov reported Saturday.
He said Iranian-made Shahed drones attacked civilian infrastructure in the city’s Nemishlyyan district, causing a massive fire that destroyed 15 civilian homes.
Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko said more than 50 people were evacuated and emergency workers had brought the fire under control by Saturday morning.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that 23 of the 31 Iranian Shahed drones launched by Russia were destroyed overnight by air defense systems. According to the statement, the drones mainly targeted the northeastern Kharkiv region and the southern Odessa region.
Odesa region governor Ole Kipel said four people were injured in the overnight drone attack there.

The attack was said to have been divided into three waves. The first target was the region’s capital, the port city of Odesa. All nine drones were shot down, but debris damaged port infrastructure and one person was injured.
Kuiper said the second and third waves targeted port infrastructure in the Danube basin. A total of 12 drones were shot down and three people were injured.
Romania’s Defense Ministry announced Saturday that Russia carried out nighttime drone attacks on the Ukrainian river ports of Ismail and Reni, near the Romanian border.
The ministry said Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jets were dispatched from a Romanian air base at around 1:15 a.m. to carry out a “reconnaissance mission” in the country’s airspace to monitor the situation. Residents in two counties adjacent to the attack were also issued a text warning.
