Drone Strike on Train in Kharkiv Region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that a Russian drone targeted a civilian passenger train in the Kharkiv region on Tuesday, resulting in at least four fatalities. He labeled the incident a “terrorist act.”

Zelenskiy emphasized the international consensus on such attacks, stating, “In any country, a drone attack on a civilian train would be viewed the same way—purely as an act of terrorism.” He argued that there’s no justification for attacking civilians and stressed that the classification of this act holds regardless of location.

According to the Kharkiv district prosecutor’s office, the confirmed death toll had risen to five by Wednesday, with two individuals injured and one person still unaccounted for.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba mentioned that three Russian drones were involved in the assault on a train carrying over 200 passengers.

Following the attack, it’s worth noting that there had been trilateral discussions held between Moscow, Kiev, and Washington in Abu Dhabi aimed at resolving the conflict that has persisted for nearly four years.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the discussions as “very constructive,” revealing plans for subsequent meetings later this week.

Amid the negotiations, Russia continued to assault Kiev’s energy infrastructure, leaving thousands without power and heating as winter conditions worsen.

Zelenskiy also shared that widespread power outages impacted numerous homes in three districts of the capital, and despite ongoing repair efforts, many residents remain without heat. “Repair crews are working at maximum capacity,” he noted, mentioning that workers from across the country had been deployed to assist.
