Russian girl who drew anti-war sketch leaves orphanage with mother

A Russian girl sent to an orphanage after drawing an anti-war sketch at school was taken out of the institution by her mother, the Kremlin’s Children’s Rights Commissioner said Wednesday.

According to Moskaryov’s lawyers and supporters, Moskaryov’s troubles began after his daughter drew a picture at the Efremov 9th School towards women and children depicting missiles flying over the Russian flag. The painting also included the words “against war” and “glory to Ukraine.”

The school called the police, the girl was questioned and Moskaryov was fined, eventually indicted and convicted for his social media posts.

The incident underscored the extent of the Kremlin’s crackdown on dissent, which has relentlessly targeted those who dared criticize the war. One of Russia’s oldest and most prominent rights groups, the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Memorial, declared Moskaryov a political prisoner.
