Russian Strikes on Ukraine’s Kharkiv Leave Six Dead, 11 Injured

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Russian forces attacked Ukraine with drones and missiles overnight, killing at least six people and wounding 11 more in Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, local officials reported.

Kharkiv Oblast Governor Oleh Sinievov said the missile attack on the city damaged homes, gas stations, kindergartens, cafes, shops and cars.

Overall, Russia launched 32 Iranian-made Shahed drones and six missiles into Ukraine overnight, according to the Air Force commander. Lieutenant General Mykola Oreshchuk said in a statement that Ukraine’s air defense forces shot down three cruise missiles and 28 drones. “Russian killers continue to terrorize Ukrainians and attack Kharkiv and other peaceful cities,” he said.

The Russian military did not comment on the attack, but said Ukraine fired a Vampire rocket at Russia on Saturday morning. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, all 10 planes were shot down by air defense systems over the Russian border region of Belgorod.

Russian troops were advancing on the ground in Ukraine, and it was “difficult” to push them back, Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Shirschiky said.

Silksi said the situation in the Bakhmut region of the partially occupied eastern region of Donetsk was particularly difficult. He said the Russian military was carrying out offensive operations day and night, using attack groups supported by armored vehicles and attacks on foot.
