Russia Proposes UN Coalition to Secure Ukraine
In a recent interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to allow a coalition from the United Nations Security Council to ensure Ukraine’s security as part of a peace deal. He placed the blame on Western European nations for hindering the potential for peace.
During a segment on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Lavrov emphasized Moscow’s expectations for concluding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He mentioned discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump regarding security guarantees for Ukraine during their latest meeting in Alaska. This follows proposals made by Russia during the unsuccessful peace negotiations in Istanbul back in 2022.
At those Istanbul talks, Russia suggested that Ukraine should remain a neutral, non-nuclear state in exchange for security assurances from the five permanent UN Security Council members: Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States.
“The guarantors would be responsible for ensuring Ukraine’s security, which is to remain neutral, not aligned with any military bloc, and non-nuclear,” Lavrov indicated, though he didn’t elaborate on how these security guarantees would actually work.
Moscow has also demanded that Ukraine give up the eastern Donbas region, which includes the Donetsk and Luhansk areas.
Lavrov criticized Ukraine’s allies in Europe for prolonging the conflict, while expressing support for President Trump’s attempts at peacemaking.
“We want peace in Ukraine. Trump wants peace in Ukraine,” Lavrov stated. He criticized European leaders, suggesting their actions were contrary to achieving peace after the meeting in Anchorage.
“When Trump raised these topics in Washington, it was evident that several principles needed acceptance, including the rejection of NATO membership and discussions around territorial matters. Zelensky dismissed all of it,” he added.
Regarding a proposed summit between Putin and Zelensky facilitated by Trump, Lavrov remarked that “Putin is open to meeting Zelensky when the agenda is appropriately prepared, but that readiness is lacking.”
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented that Russia seems to be trying to avoid a bilateral meeting while escalating their attacks on Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed his willingness to meet with Putin and called on the United States to respond strongly to Russia’s unwillingness to engage, suggesting further sanctions as a necessary measure.
At this stage, peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow still seem quite distant. Ukraine remains adamant about not negotiating territorial concessions to conclude the war.
Additionally, Kyiv is pushing for European forces to be stationed in Ukraine as part of its security framework, which directly contradicts Russia’s demand for Ukraine’s neutrality.
